US Cup: Bassi crowned against Messi’s friends

Moroccan player Amine Bassi and his team, Houston Dynamo, won the 2023 US Open Cup at the expense of Inter Miami, in the absence of its star Lionel Messi. Bassi scored the second goal for the guests who won 1-2 in Miami.

The presence of Busquets did not avoid the defeat of Inter Miami especially in the absence of Leo Messi, as well as Jordi Alba due to injury. Griffin Dorsey gave Houston the advantage after twenty-fourth minute following a counter-attack led by Amine Bassi, before the Moroccan player doubled the lead from the penalty spot few minutes later (0-2, 33′).

In the second half, Nelson Quiñones hit the net again after an assist from Bassi, but the referee ruled out the goal for an offside flagged by the video assistant referee (VAR). Amine was replaced by the Colombian Caicedo un the last seven minutes of the regulation time, and despite the pressure from the home team, Houston conserved their lead despite a goal conceded in stoppage time.

It is a well deserved crown for Amine Bassi who also played a major role in his team’s qualification for the final, as he had delivered three assists in his team’s 3-1 victory over Salt Lake City in the semi-final.
